Das WTC7 war zur Aufrechterhaltung seiner Stabilität auf die Tragfähigkeit aller 24 Stahlsäulen im Inneren des Gebäudes angewiesen. Als wahrscheinlichste Einsturzursache wurde ermittelt, dass zunächst eine und dann die benachbarten Tragsäulen einknickten, als ihre seitlichen Führungen aufgrund von Brandschäden versagten.
