The Amethyst Bio-Mat is a kind of mat or mattress which, according to manufacturers, is supposed to have a positive effect on human health. In the English-language area in particular, these mats are being promoted intensely with various pseudo-scientific claims.

Effects claimed

Amethyst mats are usual sleeping mattresses or mats containing amethysts and tourmalines. These are said to emit lightwaves, negative ions, and so-called „vibrational energies“ which, in form of „vibrational signals“, will be induced into a communication system of the mattress which does not get described, and thus create warmth to which various positive effects are attributed. Some of these mattresses contain an electrical heat source.

The effectiveness claimed is not feasible either biologically, nor medically and physically. Amethyst is not able to emit light, warmth, or negative ions without any external energy source. If it was in fact to emit such radiation, this would be radio-active and probably hazardous to human health.

There is no scientific proof of effectiveness available.

Fields of Application

Vendors claim these mats were effective in reducing fatigue and stress, easing pain and improving physical vitality. In the English-language market, vendors also promote the mat as improving the immune function, circulation and cardio-vascular function, to control weight, improve skin, and to remove bodily toxins and assist in detoxification.[1] All these claims have not been substantiated scientifically.

Prices

In the US market, prices for end customers for a single bed mattress are between $ 1,650 and approx. $ 2,700. Professional customers are offered a smaller mattress at a reduced rate; they are recommended to charge clients $ 22 for one application. There are presently only a few vendors in the German market, with end customers facing similar cost as in the USA. However, there are several websites offering applications at about € 20 for 20 minutes.
